Delete it yourself
- Sign in the way you signed up: Google, Apple, Facebook or a code sent to your email. [To confirm: Preston: the sign-in methods switched on in Clerk production]
- Open Your account.
- Under Delete account, choose Delete account…, type “delete” and choose Delete my account.
Your account is deleted at once and you are signed out. This can’t be undone.
Or ask us by email
If you can’t sign in, email privacy@govtube.us from the address on your account and ask us to delete it. We delete it and reply to confirm within 30 days. [To confirm: Preston/counsel: the 30-day response window] If you write from another address, we may ask you to confirm from the account’s address first, so no one else can delete your account.
If you signed in with Apple and chose Hide My Email, your account’s address is a relay address ending in @privaterelay.appleid.com. Tell us that address and we’ll email it to confirm. [To confirm: Preston: our sending address registered with Apple’s private email relay, or that email can’t reach you]
What is deleted
- Your account: your email address and your alert settings.
- Your API keys. Anything using them stops working at once.
- Your alerts: the words, phrases and people you follow.
- Your inbox and our record of the alerts we sent you.
- Your saved lists: every list, the quotes saved in them and your notes.
- Your place on the email list, if you joined from your account, and the record of what you agreed to.
- Your sign-in at Clerk, the company that runs sign-in for us.
What stays
- Usage counts that were never linked to your account. Our usage record never holds your account or email address, and its entries are deleted after 30 days anyway (see the privacy notice).
- Database backups. They are kept for 30 days, so your account is gone from them within 30 days. [To confirm: counsel: backup wording; the newest backup is always kept, so if backups stop, the last one outlives 30 days]
- A one-way code made from your Clerk account number, so a delayed message from Clerk can’t bring the account back.
- If an email to you bounced or was reported as spam, or you unsubscribed from the email list: a one-way code made from your address, so we never email it again. [To confirm: counsel: both codes are plain sha256, so someone who already has the number or address can check it against them]
- Your place on the email list if you joined from a form on the site rather than from your account. Use the unsubscribe link in any list email, or ask us.
- Playlists you sent us and any note you added. They are not linked to your account.
- Your theme choice and other settings kept in your own browser. Clear this site’s data in your browser to remove them.
If you signed in with Google, Apple or Facebook
[To confirm: Preston: the sign-in methods switched on in Clerk production]
Signing in with Google, Apple or Facebook gives GovTube your name and email address, and from Google and Facebook a link to your profile picture. Apple can give a private relay address instead of your own. We never get your password or anything else in that account. Clerk keeps these to sign you in; our own database keeps only your email address. Deleting your GovTube account deletes them from both.
To remove the connection on the provider’s side too, remove GovTube in that account’s settings:
